Hey, Demigods! This week’s Battle of the gods is all about the differences between 2 very talented gods! But are there even some differences? Or do they just have the same name? Let’s find out!
Apollo: Apollo is the god of music, the sun, dance, archery, light, art, healing, diseases, and even more. He’s also an Olympian and he probably has the most jobs from all the Olympians. Some people say Apollo was, after Zeus, the most important god. Apollo was the twin sister of Artemis and the son of Leto and Zeus. Apollo had multiple lovers, some were women and others were men, but made a promise to never marry anyone. The only time he wanted to give that promise up was for Daphne. After Apollo insulted Eros, the son of Aphrodite, he decided to take his revenge on Apollo. Eros shot a golden arrow in Apollo’s heart, which made him fall in love with the river nymph Daphne, and a leaden one in Daphne’s heart, which made her get an enormous disgust of Apollo. Apollo was desperately trying to get Daphne’s attention and made her fall in love with him, while Daphne was trying to run away and get rid of him. She asked her father, a river god, to help her and he turned her in a laurel tree. Apollo made a laurel crown from the leaves of Daphne’s tree and it became one of his attributes and another famous attribute of him was the lyre. The palm tree was his sacred plant because he was born under one on Delos. His sacred animals are wolves, dolphins, hawks, swans, ravens, roedeers, crows, cicadas, mice, and even griffins. He had multiple temples, the most famous of them is in Delphi, that’s also where you could find the oracle of Delphi.
Apollo: The Roman Apollo was the god of music, art, the sun, and the other things the Greek Apollo was also the god of. Apollo’s twin sister was Diana and they were the children of Latona and Jupiter. Apollo was still very important, but not that important as he was for the Greeks. In later years the Roman poets also called him Phoebus and he had multiple temples in Rome. His attributes were also the laurel crown, the bow and arrow, and the lyre.
As you can see, there aren’t many differences between the Greek Apollo and the Roman Apollo. This is also the only god that doesnt have a name change from Greek to Roman. They’re basically the same god, only difference is the Roman Apollo changed to fit in better with the Roman culture.
