Cue The Music
Number 1

Welcome to the first ever Cue The Music blog article! In this blog, you will find all of the perfect things you need to become a better music listener! Each week, we'll discuss, genre, songs, and artists! Plus, you'll get a new song of the week, to jam out to your hearts content! I, Ziza Fernson, will be here, to give you the musical rundown!

This first week, we shall be diving into a genre of music, commonly heard of and known of, as soul! Soul music is exactly that. It hits your heart hard with feels, and it makes you want to dance softly in the breeze! Notable artists from the soul genre, include but are not limited to: Aretha Franklin, Marvin Gaye, and Stevie wonder! You've probably heard of these amazing people, or at least heard their songs, even if you don't know exactly what I'm on about!

Soul music originated in the 1950's, sang primarily by African Americans! It developed from church or gospel music! (We'll dive into Gospel music later on!) To learn a little more about soul, you need to know, that Gospel music, was a either upbeat tempos, and messages, or slow songs of yearning! Soul music took both these aspects, and threw them together, getting a wonderful sound! Many of the original soul songs, were just parodies of variations of gospel music! In the 60's Motown, or the African American music industry in Detroit, starting selling Pop Soul, less of the secular music, and more originals. Down south in Memphis however, Southern Soul was taking root, with slower and smoother music!

To recap, you have southern soul, a little smoother, and slower. You have Pop Soul from Detroit, with catchier tunes, and people such as the Jackson 5, and you also have Chicago Soul, with more messages about activism. These all spawned from Secular Soul and gospel! Good! Let's go on! Soul in the later 60's and 70's have influenced many artists, from contemporary R and B, to hip hop music! Modern soul, as you might've guessed, has a more modern sounds, but is equally as good!

In these four boxes, I have four soul artists, that I reccomend that you check out!

Aretha Franklin
Aretha Franklin is amazing. Nicknamed the Queen of Soul, you'll see why when you play one of her songs! With many different kinds of songs, from love, to just fluffy messages, you'll be sure to find some amazing music by her!

I adore 'Chains, Chains, Chains,' by her!
Otis Redding
Otis Redding, was part of the Memphis soul group, whereas Aretha Franklin, came from the more secular soul genre! His songs are deep, and low. Lovely to listen to when you need something that can just take you away! Often invovling some scat towards the end, they are a joy to listen to!

I would say listen to "Dock of a Bay" It is a musical master piece.
Stevie Wonder
Stevie Wonder is amazing! His work blows me out of the water every time I listen to it! I would definetly give him a listen! Chances are you are acutely aware of his work, but you may not know it yet! Give him a shot, it will be worth it!

I would check out "Innervisions" It is lovely!
More Artists!
Lauryn Hill (Neo soul)

Sam Cooke (Secular Soul)

Amy Winehouse (Retro Soul)

Leon Bridges (Retro Soul)

All of these artists are worth checking out! You will not be disappointed!

Do your own research! Find your favorite soul artist! All of the subgenres are really cool, and I would give em a listen! So what are you waiting for? Go find some music!

Oh right, you need your song of the week! This week's song of the week is.....

"I heard it through the grapevine" Marvin Gaye.
