Queue The Music!!
Volume 4
Wow, hello today, for volume 4. It's getting progressively louder in here, isn't it? Anyways, I hope all my adoring fans, and music stans are doing well! I sure am! In this new episode of Queue the Music we will be discussing Reggae music. Now, if you know anything about this style, maybe drop a comment! If not, tell me something you've learned.
Reggae was a style developed in Jamaica. Recognised as a cultural instution by UNESCO, it's a pretty big deal, worldwide, but also culturally. So what is it exactly. Well, it came from the sound Mento, something popular in Jamaica. Mento was around in the 1940's and 1950's and sounds similar to the Calypso of Trinidad. Because Jamaica was colonized by the British and Spanish, who brought over african slaves, the music was a bit of a mashed pot of cultures.
As the decade progressed, Ska and R N' B began to influence the music of Mento, as it declined in popularity. The repetition of lyrics, and soft drum beats, with banjo's, bongos and guitar stayed. Adding the drumbeats of RNB, the style grew quickly.
In the later 1960's an Ethiopian Rastafarian priest came to Jamaica, forever tying Reggae and Rastafarianism! From this rise, Dancehall music has also been on the rise, from digital music. Let's take a quick look at top reggae artists!
